The Beach stayed afloat in overseas markets, where it was expected to gross at least twice its U.S. take, pushing it into profitability and showing just how big a force international theater circuits have become for Hollywood.

Likely growth markets for theater developers include Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia, notably Chinas untapped audience.

The growth of foreign movie markets is evident from Foxs Star Wars releases. The first three films, from 1977, 1980, and 1983, did far better domestically than overseas. B. Questions 6--10

German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749--1832) once called architecture frozen music. Although that description seems a bit cold, it does capture the essence of architecture as an art form. Some might think of architecture as merely the designing of buildings. On the contrary, as English writer John Ruskin (1819--1900) commented, No person who is not a great sculptor or painter can be an architect. If he is not a sculptor or painter, he can only be a builder. Goethe would probably add that a good architect needs to be a composer, as well. Of course, not everyone has ears to hear the lovely strains embedded in architectural forms. But for those who listen to its immobilized melodies, architecture serves as a testament to a cultures values and heritage.

Architecture in America highlights the nations intimate connection with the rest of Western civilization. Americans have often looked to Europe for inspiration in their architecture as well as in their music. Many of the major architectural icons in America almost seem to exude the elegance of a Mozart symphony. National landmarks such as the U.S. Capitol building, the White House, the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial illustrate neoclassical architecture. Their tall columns, simple geometric patterns and gleaming white marble were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Since neoclassical architecture has become identified with U.S. government buildings, Americans also call it the federal style.
