(1)        Jan Dibbets may someday have his work revered as much as his Dutch predecessors: Vermeer, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt.  At a time when the trends in art are toward abstraction and minimalism, Dibbets’ work integrates these two disparate trends into one remarkable whole.  In one series of composite works,

(5)        he arranged sections of architectural photographs into rounded patterns.  Then, with pen and ink and watercolors, he connected the segments together into 360-degree circular forms blending the abstract with the real and the imagined.  The imaginary images resemble the views of ceilings in gothic, baroque, and neo-classical buildings as they might be seen from the ground floor.

Long, long ago the Greeks and many other ancient peoples thought that numbers had magic powers.  Even today there are people who think that some numbers are lucky or unlucky.  They believe that 7 is a lucky number and that 13 is an unlucky one.  In fact, there are tall buildings in which no floor is numbered 13.  The floor above the 12th floor is called the 14th.  We all still use expressions and phrases that have come down to us from the people who once believed in the magical qualities of numbers.  We give three cheers; we talk about being in seventh heaven; we say that things are at sixes ad sevens.

Numbers have intrigued people down through the ages.  The ancient Greeks were particularly fascinated by characteristics of numbers.  To them different numbers had special qualities.  For example, the Greeks thought of even numbers (those that can be divided evenly by 2) are breakable and therefore weak and feminine.  In contrast, they thought of odd numbers as unbreakable and therefore strong and masculine.  The number 5 was used to represent marriage because it is the union of 2 and 3, the first feminine and the first masculine number.

Some relationships that the Greek found among the natural numbers seem especially interesting.  The Greeks found that some natural numbers can be divided evenly only by themselves and 1.  These numbers are called prime numbers or primes.

Of the first ten natural numbers, 2, 3, 5, and 7 are prime.  There is actually no end to the list of prime numbers.   No matter how high you count, you will still keep finding prime numbers.  After 2, itself a prime number, all the prime numbers are found among the odd numbers.  The even numbers beyond 2 can all be divided by 2.  So they are not prime numbers.  Any numbers that is not a prime number is called a composite number.
