Math and Science for Young Children 4E focuses on the integration of mathematics and science with other subject areas for children from birth through age eight. Based on theories of child development and learning, this book is compatible with guidelines and standards of many national professional organizations. Mathematics and science concepts are related to national standards and present a common framework for inclusion with music and movement, language arts, visual arts, science and social studies activities. Problem-solving is emphasized as the means for constructing concepts with a balance of naturalistic, informal, and structured activities and experiences. Units are sequenced developmentally from prekindergarten through the primary levels. Each concept unit includes assessment, instructional, and evaluation strategies. Developmentally appropriate assessment is promoted through observation, recording of anecdotal records, checklists, video and audio tapes, and performance evaluations. The book also offers information on materials and Web resources, technology, setting up learning centers, active approaches to math and science, and parent involvement. The appendices provide additional material, assessment tasks, children’s books with math and science concepts, and the code of practice on the appropriate and safe use of animals in schools.
